Happy New Year! As we step into 2022, you might have decorating resolutions waiting to be tackled. Whether your list is big or small, I’m here to help you create homes filled with function, beauty, and comfort.

This month marks the conclusion of my series on tables. After diving into side tables and kitchen/dining tables, we’re focusing on a table that homeowners often overlook, despite its versatility and charm: the console table.

What is a Console Table?

Sometimes called a sofa table or entryway table, console tables are narrow, long pieces of furniture that are open underneath. They shouldn’t be confused with credenzas, which feature drawers or cabinet doors. Console tables serve as perfect perches for table lamps, decorative vignettes, and other functional or stylish items. They provide not just light but also personality and interest to any space.

Where to Use Console Tables

1. EntrywaysThe entryway sets the tone for your entire home. I often style console tables here with:

  • A lamp for soft, cozy lighting.

  • A welcoming decor vignette: think flowers (fresh or dried), framed family photos, or seasonal elements.

  • A small tray or dish for keys, phones, and everyday essentials.

Above the console table, I recommend a mirror. It’s not only decorative but also functional for those last-minute outfit checks before you head out the door.

Tip: Not all foyers are suited for console tables. If space allows, consider a round table or a chest instead.

2. Family or Living RoomsConsole tables are incredibly useful in living spaces. If there’s room behind a sofa, a console table creates an attractive visual with added functionality:

  • Lamps to provide additional lighting and a cozy ambiance.

  • Decorative objects, small photo frames, or “coffee table books” for charm.

Remember: Don’t cram a console table behind a sofa—give the table some breathing room to create balance. If you use lamps, ensure you have nearby outlets for convenience.

Alternatively, console tables look stunning in front of large picture windows. The lamps and decor can even be appreciated from outside, creating a warm and inviting glow.

3. HallwaysLong, wide hallways can feel incomplete without a purposeful focal point. Console tables anchor the space while adding style. Above the table, consider hanging art or a mirror to elevate the look.

  • Styling Tip: You can choose symmetrical decor (like a pair of matching lamps) or opt for asymmetrical styling using items of similar size for balance.

How to Style a Console Table

  • Table Dimensions: Console tables come in various lengths, widths, and heights. Always consider the scale of your space and ceiling height.

  • Art & Mirrors: For styling, aim for proportion:

    • Vertical pieces (like art or mirrors) should be about 1/3 the table’s length.

    • Horizontal pieces work best when they span about 2/3 of the table’s length.

The Finishing Touch

Console tables are versatile design workhorses that can add warmth, light, and style to nearly any room. Whether perched in an entryway, hallway, or behind a sofa, they offer a perfect opportunity to showcase your unique style.
