Smart Design for Real Life: A Family-Focused Makeover

Hello Chester!

This month I invited one of my clients to tell you about what it's like to work with me. My client requested help renovating her basement in order to make it a spectacular hangout for her teenage grandchildren as well as a welcoming place for family gatherings centered around watching games. I assisted with selecting flooring, paint, rugs, wallpaper, bathroom upgrades, furniture, and lighting. Check out my Facebook page for all of the photos!

What made you reach out to a designer?

There were two primary reasons. Designers have a lot of resources available to them; i.e. manufactures, upholsterers, fabric, wallpaper and carpet companies etc. They bring samples so it makes it easy to shop lines and make choices that will blend together well. Secondly, I have found you get better quality furniture customized to your taste at very reasonable prices.

What was the scope of your project?

A complete basement redesign including a bathroom.

What did the design process entail and how was it helpful to you?

Molly's initial discovery meeting covered things like color preference, budget and timelines, so when she came back the second time she had tons of options for me to start to choose from- paint color, wall and floor covering and furniture. It was the most efficient process and she really nailed the aesthetic.

What solutions were presented to your design challenges?

Molly sourced products that were easy to clean or stain resistant because the basement is a hangout space for my teenage grandkids. I wanted things that looked good but that would hold up to kids.

Were unique products recommended for your home?

Yes, we used wood wallpaper!

What challenges and/or surprises popped up during the project and how were they handled?

There were no challenges, it was seamless.

Molly is knowledgeable, talented and lovely to work with. She also was very respectful of presenting only options that fit my budget and timeline.
