As a designer, I’ve been asked this question countless times recently. The answer is a resounding "yes"—at least in many residential homes. More broadly, however, the answer is "no." For designers, wallpaper never truly went away! It has always been a key tool in our design toolbox.
In commercial spaces, wallpaper has remained a staple due to its durability, style, and ability to make a strong visual impact. Hotels, restaurants, and bars often rely on bold wallpaper choices to create memorable atmospheres. For instance, the restrooms at Thai Kitchen in Chester feature a stunning combination of wallpaper, tile, and fixtures that complement their rich dining experience. Even after 15 years of visiting, I still find inspiration in their décor.
Why Did Wallpaper Fall Out of Favor?
For a time, homeowners associated wallpaper with outdated styles—florals from the '80s or ornate patterns that clashed with minimalist, modern farmhouse, or contemporary aesthetics. These misconceptions kept a valuable design element out of homes for years. However, wallpaper is far more versatile than its outdated reputation suggests.
Wallpaper can create a wow factor, set the tone, or provide a subtle, elegant backdrop that surpasses what paint can achieve. If you’ve visited chic hotels, you may have noticed their use of grasscloth wall coverings. While often faux for practicality, the texture adds warmth and sophistication, qualities that translate beautifully into residential spaces.
A Residential Renaissance
In recent months, I’ve installed wallpaper in nine bathrooms, three dining rooms, three accent walls, and even along staircases. These projects highlight a growing trend in residential design. Bold wallpaper choices are now celebrated in spaces like powder rooms and dining rooms, where you can make a statement without overwhelming the space.
Powder rooms, for example, are perfect for playful or dramatic patterns—designs that might feel too bold in a family room. Dining rooms benefit from elaborate wallpapers that make holiday gatherings feel special. Even utilitarian spaces, like laundry rooms, can be elevated with fun wallpaper, turning a mundane chore into a more enjoyable experience.
Practical Considerations
If you’re thinking about wallpaper, it’s important to have a plan. Collaborating with a designer ensures that the wallpaper enhances your space and fits seamlessly into your overall aesthetic. I begin by showing clients physical samples, as colors and scale can be misleading in online photos.
Some of my favorite wallpaper sources include Schumacher, Thibaut, Nobilis, Maxwell, and Pierre Frey. Many of these sought-after brands are available exclusively through designers, and I’m happy to offer them at a discount to my clients.
When selecting wallpaper, consider the material—vinyl, performance, or natural options—and understand how pattern repeat and match type impact the quantity needed. Professional installation ensures a polished result, and proper wall preparation is essential for long-term durability.
Inspiration and Expertise
Wallpaper has evolved far beyond the designs of the past, with options to suit any taste or style. Whether you’re looking for a bold statement, a touch of elegance, or a fun design solution, wallpaper can transform your home in ways you may not have imagined.
